Alakoko Shop

East Side, Kauai

Why Kai Loves It

This gem in downtown Lihue is hands down my favorite place to shop with purpose. Alakoko is a nonprofit shop that puts every dollar back into supporting local Kauai artists and our island's circular economy – so you're literally shopping for good while finding incredible locally made treasures. The name "Alakoko" comes from our historic fishpond and means "road of blood," honoring the dedication and hard work of generations of island makers. That passion shows in every handcrafted item on the shelves. I always grab a few bottles of Slow Island Co.'s gourmet sea salts – the Ginger Turmeric and Roselle Hibiscus varieties are absolute game-changers for your kitchen. Their Passion Fruit Chili Pepper blend makes an incredible gift that actually tastes like Kauai. What I love most is the curation. Everything here is genuinely made on Kauai by local artists and small businesses, not the typical tourist shop imports you'll find elsewhere. The selection changes as they support different makers, so I pop in regularly to see what's new. Insider tip: They're open daily from 10 AM to 4 PM, with extended Saturday evening hours. The shop is right near Hamura Saimin, so I always combine both stops – saimin lunch, then shopping. Plus, you're five minutes from the airport, making this the perfect last-minute stop before your flight home. Street parking is usually easy to find on Kress Street. This is ideal for conscious shoppers who want authentic Kauai products that support our community.
